The Rain - English Blog

Most recently, the third season of the Sci-Fi drama series “The Rain” has been launched. We had the honor to make a medallion, that plays a signifigant role in the series. I will not reveal too much, if you would like to see it for yourself.

We go way back to last summer – I was contacted by the producers from Miso Film. They were looking for a piece of jewellery for “The Rain”, which had to contain some sort of liquid. Their first thought was a small bottle to have around the neck, it had to look old like it had been hidden for many years, as well as it had to have a romantic and feminine touch – something with flowers, since flowers would have a central role in the series. I immediately started sketching, making drawings and visialized what it should look like. It was important from the producer’s side that the jewellery was Danish designed and manufactured, as the series was Danish-Swedish. 

I thought that, the flowers from my collection, “Elverhøj”,  would be perfect for the medallion, combined with the gold from the North – amber. I thought that, the concept of the forest’s mystery, and its lush flora, matched the description of the piece as we know it from folklores, but with a slight romantic touch. To bring the North more into the jewellery, the cork had to be made of amber – a material that has been in the sea for millions of years and which we are especially known for here in Denmark.

The first wax model of the bottle with the amber was done at July 22nd, 2019. The same day we contacted Miso Film and said that the model was done to be presented. In the meantime, they had discovered a misunderstanding! It should not be a small bottle but a medallion which could be opened and closed and still have room to hold liquid.

I sat back down at the work table. Miso Film loved the design of the bottle – so no major changes. The day after I had the new wax model ready – this time as a medallion. It was immediately approved and sent to casting. A few days later the jewellery returned in sterling silver. It was renovated, assembled and oxidized and by the July 27th 2019 the first closed medallion was ready. It was to be used in some of the very first filming.

After the first piece of jewellery was handed over, I had a few months to figure out a discreet mechanism that would allow the medallion to open and close. It was important that the mechanism was not too visible as it would have implications for the action of the series.

By November 5th 2019, the final medallion was done and can be seen today in the series. I managed to make a discreet closing mechanism, and if you visit us at the store’s reopening day, you will be able to see the jewellery up close. We shall see if it also contains an elixir…

I would like to give a thanks to Miso Film, for this big project. I have covered many areas of the goldsmith's techniques in the work with the medallion and it has been fantastic to be able to put it all together in to one piece and see the finished result in the series. For me, it is worthy of a lead role…
